Chapter Eleven

Fuck, Laney was brave. Joe had watched her be so brave, just lying still as that huge machine mechanically growled at her and shot radiation into her armpit and breast, which he’d tried to give her privacy and not look at too much. He wanted to cry for her. Get down on his knees and plead for her to…he didn’t know what. To be cancer free, sure. But more. He wanted to genuflect before her because he felt reverent about her. He hoped he could be redeemable enough for her to…what?

She had a boyfriend now.

One she wasn’t kissing.

He couldn’t take much comfort in that. He’d been reading one of the many pamphlets the radiation therapist had handed him, at first wondering if Jason, the asshole, had taken the time to read them. One pamphlet indicated that many radiation patients experience hormone fluctuations, turning their libido to nothing. Now was the time to be attentive to Laney’s needs of comfort and care. And if Laney had any sexual urges, then investing in lube would be a good idea.

So, maybe, Laney didn’t want to kiss her boyfriend because she didn’t want to kiss anyone. Still, Joe hoped she didn’t want to kiss her boyfriend because she wanted to kiss him, as narcissistic as that sounded. But hell, that night couldn’t have meant so much only to him. The way she’d held him when she saw him at her school made him think that night together had meant something to her too.

But what that meant now, he didn’t know.

She had a boyfriend.

She had cancer.

Watching her slowly walk from the radiation therapy room, her robe properly covering her, her slippers making sliding noises, made him realize he didn’t know what he wanted from her, except one thing: He had to be close to the courageous woman. Because…how could he not? All his life he’d wanted to be brave, to show his dad he could be heroic. She already was. She was this beautiful shining example of everything he wanted to be. He was too far gone himself, but he’d protect her and her mettle. He’d shield her from whatever might come her way. Well, he’d fucking try. He might not be able to take away her cancer, but he could damned well take care of her to ensure she kept being the brave woman she was.

She smiled at him when she saw him in the hallway. Lit up the small space with her grin. Lit him up on the inside. He bent and picked her up in his arms before she could protest.

“I can walk, Joe. I’m fine.”

Joe didn’t set her down, even though his pec and left shoulder pinged a warning. Still, he had to hold her. He just had to.

He couldn’t explain himself so he just followed the male nurse who smiled at him and guided them to the room where her clothes were neatly folded on a corner of the examination table.

“I feel good this time.” Laney’s voice was sing-song happy.
